Last June 27 and July 10, students of Leung Shek Chee college and the F-STEM team conducted the F-STEM workshop, wherein students were introduced to basic concepts in inclusive design, smart textiles, Polymeric Optical Fiber (POF) textiles and design led STEM.
The session started off with lectures by Dr. Miu Wong, who lectured on the need of design led STEM for product innovation and of inclusive design in today's day and age. Following the lectures, a series of hands-on workshops were conducted wherein students were given the opportunity to learn about working with POF textiles, weaving using a loom and electronic circuit. One student commented on how weaving was enjoyable and envisioned how she might weave textiles with different colors and textures.
After the workshops, students were tasked with the challenge of designing a fashion garment that utilized POF textiles and electronic circuits as a means to solve a problem. Using the techniques learnt in the workshops, students hand-crafted their prototypes using clothes donated by Theory, and ideated ways work together to solve a problem.
At the final stages, students had their final design presented to the Fashion-Stem team and the Royal School of Art's team.Students worked on a variety of innovative ideas from POF, electronic devices, and loom textiles that help the convenience of the elderly.
The F-STEM team looks forward to seeing the student's work in the near future!
